Today our modern world has many forms of media which people use to air their views about anything and everything. We are in a world where everyone wants to be heard and seen, to be recognised by what we do or what we can offer. Fashion has taken the centre stage of our daily lives. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers.
What a person chooses to wear can reflect their personality. All it takes is a popular figure to wear something different (or edgy) and a fashion trend is born. Those in awe of such ones become influenced, the styles trickle through designers and then into our local high street for the common people. I mean how many people have you seen rocking the camel waterfall coat and midi skirts after seeing Keeping Up with the Kardashians? Fashion varies considerably within a society according to age, social class, generation, geography and of course time.
If an older person dresses according to the fashion of the young, they may look ridiculous in the eyes of both young and old. In fact the terms fashionista and fashion victims have developed, describing those whose fashion sense is hot and those who just can’t seem to get it right.
Fashion can be used to promote a cause from health awareness to cancer research. Rihanna’s Diamond Ball last month attests to this where the singer hosted a fundraising event for The Cara Lionel Foundation wearing two stunning originals by Zac Posen.
In modern day, media plays a significant role in the fashion world so much so that the field of fashion journalism has developed. Editorial critique, guidelines and commentary can be found on television, in magazines, newspapers, social network, fashion websites and blogs. In recent years fashion blogging and YouTube videos have become a major outlets for spreading fashion trends and tips. Through theses media outlets readers and viewers all over the world can learn about fashion, making it very accessible.
For me, there are two of 2014’s biggest trends, which I believe, thanks to the media has become more than it should have been, and I hope never makes a come back in 2014. They are the distressed jeans and cropped tops. Which is your worst 2014 trend?
