Selma: The March To Glory

Selma is hitting UK cinemas from Friday 6th February and I, for one, cannot wait! Staring British Nigerians David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. and Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, this Oscar nominated movie chronicles the epic march in Alabama (1965) from Selma to Montgomery in an attempt to secure equal voting rights in the face of severe opposition.10 selma1 selma

With an all star cast of heavyweight actors, this film promises to be a moving account of Dr King’s campaign. However there has been some criticism towards the recognition of the movie in this award season. Although the movie itself has been nominated for both Best  Picture and Best Original Song (for Globe-winning Glory by Common Sense and John Legend) director Ava DuVernay was not acknowledged in the category of best director (a nomination that could have been the first for an African-American woman), nor were any of the actors nominated in their respective categories.08 05

Despite this “snub” by the Oscars, it would appear that Selma is being recognised by a more influential source. President Obama is to host a screening of this historic film tomorrow evening at the White House for the cast and crew.
