Onalaja is a contemporary womenswear brand which debuted earlier last year at Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2015.
The label was founded by Kanyinsola Onalaja following her graduation from Istituto Marangoni in 2014. The brand aims to bridge the gap between Kanyinsola’s Nigerian heritage and flair for artisan crafts, Italian design aesthetics with the formality of the British tribalism and traditions.
The focus of the brand is on perfect execution, craftmasnship and the imaginative concept of luxury and culture. Pieces are designed for the modern woman who represents the new ideal, where the woman is her entity, a strong representation of freedom, change and modernity. Onalaja experiment with fabrics, manipulation, textiles and colour to create a refined yet creatively experimental piece, that is often unconventional but wearable.
The Spring Summer 16 collection examines the aesthetics of the modern woman while exploring the Yoruba heritage through the name and definition of Oluwakanyinsola (God’s added Sweetness). The name is analogous to sweet honey made by the bees from flower nectar. The collection reimagines the modern woman through hand sketched and painted prints of flowers, petals, bees, along with 3d appliqués and rufflings of various sizes, whilst playing on the woman’s inner girlish attraction to the colour pink.
We just love the attention to detail in this collection.
