Vlisco, a fashion company that was created in 1846, is celebrating the 170th anniversary this year. With those 170th years comes a very unique origin story. The Dutch discovered the batik design in Java, Indonesia and started to use these designs and thus were adapted to West African taste and gained popularity in West and Central Africa.
The Dutch depended on African traders to source them high in quality, rich in color and pleasant to wear in hot weather, fabrics. Each yard of fabric is unique and they are now the only brand that are still creating “genuine Wax Hollandais fabrics today.”
With this type of history of everybody caring about the quality of the designs and fabric it’s not a wonder as to how Vlisco has made it to 170 years. They have made fabric specifically for the 170th anniversary and here are some designs of the types of fabrics that they make.
Congradulations to Vlisco for 170 years and may they have many, many more!
