Most of us can remember a time as a little girl when most if not all our dolls had Caucasian skin. Fast forward to 2019 and we have a variety of black Barbie dolls. Dao London’s series is a reminder that representation is important.

Dao London, a UK based clothing brand, was started by Paule- Carine Dao because she couldn’t find fashion that represented the millennial African decent who is proud of their cultural garments but needed a much needed upgrade in terms of styles and trends.

In her latest collection, Paule tapped into the inner African girl and recreated some of the most iconic Barbie imagery, like the typical 1950’s style of Barbie doing house work to this decade’s  characteristics of being a shopaholic.

The showstopper in the Black Barbie series is called the Kente Tule Skirt, a multi-layered garment made from Kente printed mesh.

Speaking of the garment, Paule says:

”You can be anything you aspire to be, as long as you believe in yourself”
