The talk of inclusion on a broader scale continues as Cynthia Erivo and Charlize Theron are nominated for this year’s Oscars.
Cynthia Erivo is of Nigerian heritage while Charlize Theron comes from South Africa. However, 92nd Academy Awards has fallen short in terms of the space for people of colour with Erivo getting the spot as the only one to be nominated, but Africa can afford to smile as Charlize joined her on the nomination list.
Both talented film stars will battle each other out for the Best Actress trophy as Erivo is nominated for her sterling performance in Harriet Tubman’s biopic Harriet, and Charlize for the film – Bombshell. Erivo also grabbed a nomination for Best Original Song, for Stand Up – the soundtrack to Harriet, so she is in for double.
Incase, Erivo wins in the lead role category, she will become the second black actress to win it since Halle Berry won it 2001. Furthermore, Erivo could also become the youngest win quadruplet, one from Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony (EGOT), that would be an outstanding historic moment.
Oscars 2020 will be hosted at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, California on February 9th.
