Born in England and raised in Nigeria, Denrele Agoro’s personal style features a wide range of influences. After spending years making her own clothes, she decided to formalise her passion and create her own fashion brand, the silky, sexy Seta The Label. At just 23 years old, Denrele Agoro’s brand already boasts a legion of loyal fans, and was listed as one of ELLE Magazine’s favourite black-owned brands earlier this year. I recently caught up with the budding designer to find out more about her one-of-a-kind label and her journey so far as a designer.
How did you first get into fashion and how did you end up launching your own label?
I’ve always loved looking good and dressing up. I used to constantly DIY my old denim shorts and t-shirts, especially for occasions like ‘Fundays’ and class parties back in school. To be honest, when I was younger I never thought I’d start a clothing line. I just always thought I’d end up in a corporate firm. During the Christmas holidays in 2015 I was trying to put some outfits together. Around that time I became obsessed with slip dresses & skirts, but I never really found the perfect one to fit my silhouette. The ones I spotted were too expensive so I decided to make my own. From then on people kept asking me ‘where did you get your outfit from?’ and ‘can you make something like this for me?’. I think that’s what triggered me to start my own brand. Seta officially launched in September 2018.
How would you define your personal style and how do you incorporate this into your designs?
I would say my personal style is sexy but still comfortable. I feel like that’s what Seta is about. Each design has been made with quality and vibrant materials to bring a hint of sexiness to my clients’ everyday wardrobes.
What’s been a proud/surprising moment for you so far as a designer?
Well I’ve had a few magazines and publications reach out to me, but I can’t reveal too much about those yet. Earlier this year I was featured in ELLE Magazine’s ‘Black-owned brands to support’ list. That was a proud moment for me. Also, just seeing my brand grow continuously. I see people who I don’t know wearing my designs and it’s still so surprising to me.
How do you want women to feel when they wear Seta?
I want women to feel sexy in my clothes, but also most of our pieces are inspired by tropical designs and have a ‘holiday’ theme. When you wear Seta I want you to feel like you’re on vacation, sipping a Piña Colada and listening to soothing music.
One of my favourite pieces was the Bora Bora mini dress, and clearly I’m not the only one who loved it since it’s already sold out! Did you expect any of your pieces to sell out or did that come as a surprise to you?
No, I didn’t expect that at all! I’m always very nervous when I release a new design because I want people to be in love with each piece. I did not expect that type of reception at all. But I am so grateful and just shows that my hard work is paying off.
Where do you hope to see Seta going in the next few years?
I hope to see my brand continuously progressing in every way possible with constant growth and exposure. I’m ready for whatever comes my way!
