The Ghana Diaspora Celebration & Homecoming Summit 2019 took place on 3-4 July , 2019 at the Accra International Conference Centre, Accra.
The Ghana Diaspora Celebration & Homecoming Summit 2019 (GDHS’19), the first of which took place in 2001, is a four-day event to recognise and celebrate the immense contributions to nation building by the Ghanaian Diaspora. The event not only highlights past contributions, but also focuses on present strides as well. GDHS’19 further advocates for political, economic, and cultural inclusion, and exploring systems and policies that would facilitate greater, systematic, and more integrated contributions from the Ghanaian Diaspora. The summit strongly connects with the Ghanaian ‘Year of Return’ project encouraging those in diaspora to reconnect to Ghana and includes those of Africa origin globally to connect to Ghana.
In light of the fourth centennial commemoration of the arrival of enslaved Africans in the western hemisphere, the event recognises that the Ghanaian Diaspora extends beyond Ghanaian citizens or nationals and their immediate relatives, but also include others outside the borders of Ghana, with roots to, or a strong vested interest in the country and continent. This recognition, is based upon the need and desire for a long-term engagement between Ghana and her important stakeholders. It is accompanied by the Ghana Government’s open-arm policy to all people of African descent.
The summit and ‘Year of Return’ seek to:
- Create networking opportunities for the Ghanaian Diaspora
- Create avenues for Government Agencies and the Business community to share information and engage the Ghanaian Diaspora to peak their interest in the exercise of Nation Building.
This year’s Summit included case studies of businesses created and effective business relationships formed during the last Summit, an inclusion of the private sector in the presentations and more focused and round table discussions. There was also a brilliant networking opportunity that had professionals from every industry making fruitful connections.
The key note speaker for the summit was His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana.
