In this fast-paced world, there isn’t enough time for women to seat to have their hairs fixed for long hours and then protecting them from harsh weather conditions for days before changing them. Busy work schedules, planning the next vacation and other activities make things impossible for women to have the kind of hairstyles they are used to growing up, hence the influx of wigs that have for the better part of the century have taken over the world enhancing women’s looks.
However, with the massive impact wigs have had on women and transforming some economies, the African braids, cornrows are most at times not found on the market. Women of Africa and Carribean origins who prefer the woven braids, micro braids, micro twists, and cornrows have to still visit the salon if they wish to get their favourites ones on, that hectic and head aching moments are over now, thanks to Divalocks launched by Nigerian businesswoman, Chinye Ukwu.
In our interview with Chinye, she explained why it was of paramount importance to launch Divalocks to make women feel confident in their braids for any occasion.
KVJ: Why did you decide to launch Divalocks?
CU: Divalocks was created to promote the rich variety of artisan and indigenous African braids that reflect the varying cultures in Nigeria and surrounding West African countries. All our wigs are handmade by the locals in Nigeria. We want to provide women of African and Caribbean heritage who love to wear African braided styles, the ability to wear them anytime they want to, without the fuss of spending hours and hours in a hair salon, or having to find a hair salon that specializes in great braids, which can be a rare find indeed. We offer a large variety of head-turning braided wigs so that in a matter of seconds, every woman can have a salon-ready braided look at fraction of the cost.
KJV: This is such a great idea! So who are your customers?
CV: Braided styles are works of art that can be worn with pride and elegance by women of all ages and our current customers deeply reflect this. We’re catering to the worldly women who are not located near any hair braiding salons, we’re looking out for the lovely ladies who want to protect their hair as they restore it to its natural state without compromising sophistication. And of course, we’re not forgetting all those glamorous girls who simply want the luxury of being able to switch up their look whenever and wherever the situation demands. It’s all about choice and variety.
KJV: The spice of life! It’s brilliant that you can provide bespoke wigs for your clients upon request also. Tell us more about the process of developing the wigs.
CU: To create each braided wig, every braid or twist is meticulously woven onto a breathable and adjustable wig cap. In the next step, it is neatly braided or twisted. We use 100% Kanekalon hair in all our wigs. Most of our braided wig styles (such as the Micro Twists or the Micro Braids) are designed with a realistic looking parting, which can be worn as a middle or side parting. The realistic looking parting is achieved by carefully attaching a lace closure to the unit. Each completed wig is passed through our stringent quality control checks to ensure any imperfections are either rejected or where possible, corrected prior to shipping to the UK. The quality of this selection truly rivals the actual braids installed into your own hair.
KJV: Well we’re definitely sold! What are your future plans and goals for the brand?
CU: Our future plans for the Divalocks brand is to be an avenue via which new and existing African braided wigs from all over Africa are showcased to the world, providing women of African or Afro Caribbean heritage a huge selection of beautiful African braided wigs that celebrate their heritage and their history. Our plans also include the need to be an ethical brand, being able to improve the livelihood of the locals that create these beautiful African Braided Wigs, thereby making a positive impact in society. Divalocks would also like to expand their hair braiding operations to produce natural wig care products using ancient hair and wig care recipes. It’s an exciting road ahead!
