Esther Mahlangu is a South African Ndebele artist who is collaborating with BMW for the second time! In 1991, Esther was the first woman to create artwork for the BMW 525i Sedan exterior. Her artwork pays homage to her Ndebele heritage, and the bodywork of the car was covered with classic Ndebele art.

Now she is back again, this time painting the interior trim on a BMW 7 Series which will be a one of a kind car. The car is up for silent auction here and the bidding will end at the end of the Frieze Art Fair.

African artists are really starting to get the recognition that they deserve! Esther Mahlangu, who is in her 80’s, proves that you can achieve greatness at any age , potentially start a new trend and open up a pathway for more collaborations between African artists and major corporations.

#GlamSquad do you think more car companies should collaborate with African artists to create more diverse and unique car exteriors and interiors? And should they start selling them to the public?
