Comedienne Gina Obedapo Iyashere also known as “Gina Yashere” in the comedy world is bringing Nigerians to Primetime.
If you do not recognise her name yet, then you’ll certainly recognise her face. Gina Yashere is a four times black female entertainment award winner, often seen performing comedy on U.K TV shows since. She’s made appearances on shows like Live at the Apollo, Mock of the week and most recently successfully breaking into America.
She is now a firm regular making appearance on Comedy Central with stints on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno and most prominently on “The Daily Show” – hosted by South African comedian and author, Trevor Noah.
Gina recently explained in a interview with U.S based Ghanaian journalist Christabel Nsiah-Buadi that the idea behind the new show was to throw more bright lights on her Nigerian roots. The show will take the audience into the world of a Nigerian woman who speaks Yoruba (a local dialect in Nigeria).
Detailing how the idea for the show sprung-up. Gina said she was contacted by veteran American comedian, Chuck Lorre who was then searching for an African female comedian to bring his concept into fruition with a huge focus on authenticity. The first episode of ‘Bob Hearts Abishola’ was aired on CBS on September 23rd, 2019, garnering great reviews from movie critics and audiences alike.
In the first episode, a middle-aged businessman – Bob (played by Billy Gardell) falls in love and determined to win the heart of his cardiac nurse, Abishola (played by Folake Olowofoyeku) – a Nigerian immigrant who is treating Bob from a heart attack.
