Glow through what you go through’ is a phrase that completely tells the story of Lola Johnson, the founder of Loveshea skincare, a vegan-friendly and cruelty-free skincare brand with inclusive solution-focused products geared towards long term skin health.  In a stroke of entrepreneurial savvy, the math-loving actuary and natural skincare enthusiast turned her most challenging skin condition -hyperkeratosis (which causes thickened skin and hyperpigmentation on the hands and feet) to a potential goldmine.

Speaking to Lola, she shared with me the events that led up to her decision to become a natural cosmetics formulator and what her journey has been like so far. She told me:

“I founded LoveShea Skincare in 2015 although I had been making natural products for personal use for many years before that. My passion for all things natural and organic was first borne out of doing a “big chop” and starting a natural hair journey. I had extremely thick, tight 4C hair as a child and my mum could not braid, so my hair was subjected to various chemicals. First curly permed (think ‘Coming to America’) and then relaxed at a very young age. As I hit my teens and early twenties my relaxed hair became finer and weaker and I was becoming more conscious of it but was not educated at all as to what my alternatives were. When I became pregnant with my first child, I knew I no longer wanted the dangerous relaxers any longer; and thus, started my journey of self-education into how to look after my hair in its natural state. With thanks to YouTube and bloggers such as Whitney of Naptural85, and the book “The Science of Black Hair” by Audrey Davis Sivasothy I gained so much understanding of exactly what our hair, and in turn skin, needs to flourish and be nourished, and more importantly what it didn’t need.
I also have a genetic incurable skin condition called Hyperkeratosis which causes thickened skin and hyperpigmentation on my hands and feet. I had been prescribed many steroid-based creams over the years which thinned my skin and caused more damage and was fed up of using synthetic mineral oils or petroleum-based emollients which were greasy, artificial and were not absorbed by or nourishing to the skin in any way. Researching better ways to look after my skin health, manage my Hyperkeratosis and look after my natural hair led to the discovery of some of the most powerful, healing, moisturising, nutrient-packed ingredients that nature has to offer. Our ingredients are simple but effective. We do not use chemical processes or high heat in our formulations. We use ethical packaging, are proudly paraben, mineral and petroleum oil-free, vegan friendly, cruelty-free and made in the UK!”

Loveshea skincare has since then grown to become a highly-sought-after natural skincare brand with an inclusive product range with options for the whole family. From moisturisers formulated specifically for babies to moisturisers and serums that are perfect for reducing the signs of ageing. Products are created for people with dry or inflamed skin conditions and are open to trying a natural, organic alternative to managing it. According to Lola, “our target audience is anyone looking for enviable, beautiful, soft plump skin using nature’s finest natural ingredients, from products that will not break the bank!”.
