Rema is a new force and voice in Afrobeat that’s on a quest to do things a bit different from the norm.
With just a single self-titled extended play on the Nigerian music market, the 19-year old Mavin signee is creating nearing, and almost fetching the tag as the ‘prince of Afrobeat’. The EP comprises of fours songs – Why, Iron, Dumebi and Corny, which he breaks down in an interview with Pitch Fork.
Narrating the message behind emotionally driven singles like ‘Why’, Rema says, it’s because growing up he fell in love with a rich girl in his community but she didn’t reciprocate the love. On his style of music which is likened to Nigerian Afrobeat superstar, Wizkid and others, Rema agreed his music has Afrobeat in it but the influences of sounds from the west inspired him to add a bit of trap to the genre to create his own style of music.
Rema wants to use music as a medium to inspire the youths to go after their dreams, not depend on politicians and anybody.
