French-born Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop is taking over filmmaker industry with her debut feature titled Atlantics.
Acquired by streaming platform Netflix, the critically acclaimed film became cinema lovers favourite after it won the Cannes Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, the award is the second-highest honour after Palme d’Or, presented to one of the selected feature films at the festival.
Atlantics shot in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, telling the true story of migration where a group of young construction workers set on a journey on the ocean to seek for greener pastures in Europe after several months of owed salaries, they mysteriously disappeared on the sea.
Mati Diop focused on the families and love ones left back home, the nightmares they went through with hopes of them returning home. The intriguing story of the film has made earn as Oscars (The Academy Awards) entry for Best International Film from Senegal.
Atlantics was released in France on October 2, it stars mostly budding talents from Senegal such as Mame Bineta Sane, Ibrahima Mbaye Sope, Traore and more. However, the film is expected to make official cinema debut on November 15 and on Netflix on November 29.
