With 2019 bending around the corner fast, we at GA always make a point not to get taken by the festivities and put off important tasks. We were reminded of this while we plan a big surprise event in the new year at our UK headquarters. And while a quarter of our team is based in London, we were suddenly all bonded by a common thread: the UKVI (British Visa).

Whether you are already living in the UK, applying for citizenship or securing a visa for visitation, many of us have crossed paths with the task of fulfilling their criteria and tend to get overwhelmed with where to begin. Well we are always here to guide you.

In the UK, because English is the official language, one of those criteria is passing the Secure English Language Test (SELT) as a measure of how well you would be able to communicate effectively while living in the country. Getting this accreditation is where we would say you should start.

Start by bookmarking the Trinity College London website [the approved provider for SELTs] as it has all the information you need to know about the different qualifications, all in one place. Whether it be the Integrated Skills in English (ISE) tests or  Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE), they have a wealth of information and resources to assist you with getting it right.

With 10 centres across the UK that offer assistance with UKVI, Trinity offers a range of SELTs that is required to be passed in order for your visa, settlement or citizen application to be approved. These are:

  • Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE) – a 6 minute (A1), 7 minute (A2) or 10 minutes (B1) one-on-one spoke and listening test. Provisional results are given on the same day and certificates are usually sent within 7 days.
  • Integrated Skills in English (ISE) – This is a contemporary four-skills qualification, testing for reading, writing, speaking and listening. Trinity results/certificates are usually sent within 21 days.

How do you know which test is for you?

The GESE tests are approved for British Citizenship, settlement and visa applications while the ISE tests go into the intensity of your visa application based on tiers 1 to 4. But don’t start panicking again, looking through their site, Trinity have taken steps to make things easy and go as far as providing a wide range of FREE learning resources and sample papers to guide you through your process .
