Our hair is our crowning glory. It enhances our entire look and can either make us smile or groan when we catch our reflection in a mirror during the course of the day. Hair business is a trillion dollar industry so if we as the industry users are making uninformed choices maybe it’s time to change that. Are you aiming for manageable hair? Waist length or longer hair? Is it for glamour? It has to be more than just looking presentable right?

Hair Goals are super useful because they help you develop your objectives or the ‘hows’ of achieving your desired end result, and decide on what styles, treatments and products to avoid or to try.  Our hair is much more than something that must be ‘done’. Hair goals should be set by everyone regardless of how you choose to wear your hair, so maybe the 2015 could be the start of  new healthier hair habits for you and if you have children why not discuss hair goals with them?

For hair goals to work they must be SMART.

1) Specific:                              For example, “I want to grow my hair healthily to waist length because I love long hair”.

2) Measurable:                      For example, “I will check my progress every four months because on average hair grows half an inch per month so after four months I should see a change in length from my starting length”.

3) Attainable:                         For example,  “ I will consider styling options I may have previously overlooked and understand that I may need to change my attitude towards my hair and also my general health. I will drink more water and eat more vegetables. So this step involves moving out if your comfort zone but it will be worth it”.

4) Realistic                              For example,   If my current hair length is bald/Teeny Weenie Afro then wanting waist length hair within a year will be deflating unless I bring in the “wig/weave intervention”. It’s more beneficial for me to decide on a five year plan to reach waist length.

5) Timely                                 For example,  “ I would like to have waist length hair by 2020 but I will start making changes today and review my progress every four months”.

Hopefully this should help in setting your hair goals. Remember the above is just an example. Ultimately your lifestyle and individual needs should be your guide. Healthy hair is important whether you choose to relax, texlax or wear your hair natural. Asking questions about what you are doing to your hair and how your choices will affect your hair (and indeed your hairline) will help you make informed decisions. Are you on a hair journey? Do you have hair goals? What do you do to keep on track of your goals and what is the most important thing you have learned about yourself and your hair? Please do share and in the meantime “happy hair loving”
